i throw stuff out there with very little knowledge...please help me learn colors and when to use em.

Cloudy? use bright colors. sunny? use darker more earthy toned colors.

Heckler is right to a point. You need to look at the water clarity. Clear water throw darker colors. Muddy or stained water throw light ones. I personnelly throw watermelon mixed with differnt colors. Such as watermelon with blue flake or watermelon black and red. i also put smelly jelly on it.
