Spring '10 Reports
With the weather nearing 60, thought I'd drop a line in my local pond. Been catching some trout in my TMA, but thought I'd try to entice a bass. Water is still COLD, but I figured it couldn't hurt to wet a line. Tried crawling a few crankbaits along with good pauses at various depths, a stickbait or two with long pauses, and a little wacky worm dropping in a few suspected spots with no luck. Water was real clear, so while I didn't catch any fish I was able to check out some structure and bottom features I hadn't seen before. Boat is getting serviced, and I'm chomping at the bit. Have to make due with trout and pickeral 'till things warm up. Once I get the boat back I'll start fishing for some pike and carp. Last year the carp were running in mid/late March. Thinking maybe weathersfield cove in a few weeks.

the early bird catches the worm, eh.............take rna's mindset and always look near where you live...fishing can be a walk away from your front door.

I like Mike Iaconelli's "City Limits Fishing" show on Vs. Shows that you can catch fish just about anywhere if you really want to.

Re: Spring '10 Reports
Took my boat out on the pond late last week to try and target a few big bass I'd seen from shore up in the cover at the base of a steep embankment. It was windy as hell and I really had trouble manuevering w/out a foot pedal. Wasn't having much luck w/ the pumpkin football jig or sinko, so I threw one of the few remaining large pond shiners I had left over from fishing w/ Meatloaf. Barely hit the water when the bobber went 2 ft. under. Nice bass close to 3 lbs. Plan to go out again Thursday evening. Going to do a couple mile river float down my TMA or hit Hamburg Cove if the weather is nice Sunday.

Re: Spring '10 Reports
If my local is any indication, time to get out and fish. Lots of action, and I've fished primarily spinners and especially the Bass Pro Humpin Toad or the Strike King rage toads in pumpkin. Haven't really pulled out the tubes or Senkos in my back yard as I'm fishing real shallow in lots of grass and the place is crawlin' with frogs.

Re: Spring '10 Reports
I'm picking up some nice fish just after sunset, but some guys just don't get it. Fellow I've seen the past 2 nights down hasn't caught a thing. Keeps chucking his Rapala out into the middle of the pond, while I pulled 3-4 good keepers from either side of him within 5-10 feet of the bank. I don't want to be too intrusive, but have mentioned in passing that some real nice fish are holding right up near the shore. Even offered him a Storm King frog as he seems nice enough. Now granted, I'm no KVD, but if some dude catching a lot of fish offered some advice, I'd give it a try. There's this old guy down in Norwich who is a magician catching stripers when nobody else gets squat. If he told me to stand on my head while I retrieve, I'd give it a try! No matter where you go, there are always some old timers who've gotten more about fishing than most of us will ever learn.

Re: Spring '10 Reports
The mad pre-spawn bite is over, but the fishing remains pretty good. Still been working the same areas with frogs, and the ponds around me are filling up w/ snot and limiting me to all weedless presentations. Not as many big bass holding in the shore accessable shallows, which have been fished to death now around me, and last night I missed the 2 good sized hits I got. 2 weeks left of school and then I will have the boat out more to open up the options. Though I tend to focus more on salt h2o, I'm also a big fan of smallie fishing on the rivers. Can't wait to be fishing 3-4 times a week!
