gibbs lures, stan gibbs, john gibbs>>>STRIPER HARDWOOD BAITS
After doing a little research....well....i have gotten obsessed over surf plugs...particularly the gibbs line...it all started when i found a great deal on ebay for pencil poppers(for rna and i to split)...gibbs lures are heavy favorites among veteran surf casters all over the world, but new england..... BIGTIME!.they are made from solid wood, handmade with through wire construction, and sealed and painted very well..all of the hardware are made to withstand years of abuse....
stan gibbs started it all and became popular in the 50's-60's...he handed his lure making business to his son, john gibbs, and he continued to help with the business until the early 80's?...they sold the business, and the gibbs lure co, still makes handmade lures to this day....the craftmanship is almost as good, the only difference is i can see is attention to detail and some minor lure design modifications.
You can get the older stan/john gibbs lures on ebay for cheaper than you can get the new ones!I know it sounds crazy, but if you are patient, and like hunting for things on the net, you can really clean up...i got a 3 oz black casting swimmer, and a 2.25 oz polaris popper shipped for 20......the 3oz casting swimmer alone is 22 dollars...at cabelas-even more.....
gibbs lures can be found at most good tackle shops carrying surf lures....they don't sell to major chains...but i have seen them at cabelas....but they are not in any of their catalogs.....
their swimming/diving lures actually wobble from the middle, a design that is very different from many other lures..
i will be posting some pics, and hopefully some vids of how gibbs work in reply to this post

Re: gibbs lures, stan gibbs, john gibbs>>>STRIPER HARDWOOD BAITS
many of stan's lures have been copied by both commercial and amateur builders....
if you are searching for a vintage one new in package, the lettering on the package would be bold black on the front saying stan gibbs or gibbs (john's lures).
they are from buzzard's bay mass.and if you are looking for a real old one-they are in boxes...i guess after a while stan decided packaging would be better for mass sales(it seems to be cheaper...and easier to display)
the new gibbs packaging are in red lettering.the lure colors are not as "pretty"...stan and john used a lot of red "blush" on their lures simulating blood or gills..the new ones fetch high prices 16-32 dollars...if you want an assload of new ones, i suggest you go to gibbslures.com....they are marked up alot in any store.
ANY gibbs lure will give you years of fishing...so much so that you could pass them on to future generations....and if the blues really f%7! up your paint job....well paint over it....i guess you can just wood putty the holes...sand off the excess and just repaint the bugger.

Re: gibbs lures, stan gibbs, john gibbs>>>STRIPER HARDWOOD BAITS
so another reason to fish gibbs, is that you know that these lures are sealed many times before they are painted..this makes the paint job and the integrity of the lure 110%...cheap lures may show cracks, bubbling and possibly dulling after some dunks in the saltwatta...i will prove this by testing a luhr jensesn swim oreno to see what happens.....

another reason to buy gibbs?well each lure has specific instructions on the their website...lots of lure makers are missing this feature....we are going to show the world how just a little bit of camera footage can help others learn....oh hell yes

pics of gibbs...
that was a picture of a 5.5 in danny plug...it's a new one...address on back is RI...made by the guys who took over gibbs lures....quality product.....
here are some more pics....of the hardware on them.....thru-wire construction...sharp ass hooks, great colors, and strong swivels on the belly..
here is a set of casting swimmers...note 3 different packages....stan gibbs....john gibbs(just sez gibbs)....and the new ones out of RI....
here are the difference between the old school and new school gibbs...note the new ones look more commercial.
a fellow fisherman told me stan gibbs was a hick and made lures for everyone...he liked to trap animals and to give lures for favors...
the redish mouth one is the vintage one....
ok here is a deal i got.....4 gibbs dannys and 3 gibbs needlefish for 53 dollars shipped....they actually cost upwards of 18 bucks a piece......hell yes....
this guy who sold it to me was a dipshit, and i thank him for it..here are the 4 dannys...on the small side, perfect for the boat or a smaller surf rod...note the black one.....perfect for night fishing the deep parts of the river or between the two bridges in waterford
