'09 Summer Reports
It's summer? Tried to go out this morning from Niantic but the weather kept me in close. Wanted to try around Black Point but it kept looking like thunder storms, which don't mix well with my little boat. Ran back in once, ventured out again, then back for good by 9:30. Waste of time. Nothing on the fish finder. Weather is supposed to be nice tomorrow, so I'm going to head to Barletts where there has been some decent top-water, if inconsistent keepers. Going out on a charter Sunday with my brother and a friend. Hope to finally get into some decent size stripers that have eluded me this spring.

I'm pretty sure he can make it, but if not, you can be the one to try and give him noogies. I quite trying when he hit high school and could kick my ass. (He's the little guy lifting the 800lb. axle/tires).

Re: '09 Summer Reports
7/8 - Went out of Stonington today. Too late (7:00) for the really busy topwater, but caught a few schoolies off the reefs and hit into a few schools of blues. Short of landing monster fish, blues on light tackle are lb/lb some of the most fun I have. Topwater plug and my little Penn 460 w/ 12 lb. fluoro and I have a blast. Wish there had been more, but they just showed up for a bit and were gone. Might go out again Friday if the wind stays down. Only blemish on today was the Jersey a-hole in the 45 ft. sportfisher came came right up to the mouth of the harbor past me on plane and nearly swamped me. He throttled back about 50 yards past me. I was livid. I cut inside the channel buoys across the sand flats to pull up beside him and give the one finger salute with a few choice words. The guy was clueless.

Re: '09 Summer Reports
Three days this week isn't half bad. Back to Niantic today, but got the first big skunk on the NaCl this year. I went from Black Rock Point all the way around to the Millstone outflow. Nada. Saw one boat pull in a small fluke and that was it. I was seeing some fish hanging off a few of the shelfs but couldn't buy a bite. Threw jigs, sluggos, all kinds of other soft plastics, trolled tube and worm - nothing. There has been no big bait and no school action at all in Niantic. I guess a morning in the sun on the water isn't that bad though. Going on a charter Sunday, so that will be my next NaCl report.

Re: '09 Summer Reports
Went to Rocky Neck yesterday. Got there about 3 hours before high tide. I got some bites but didn't catch anything. The guy next to me caught 2 flounder and 5 or 6 short porgies. I got picked apart by the flounders and I hooked a blue fish that shredded my 30lbs test like it was nothing. Not the best day but at least I got out for a couple of hours. Will have a report next weekend from Boston. Going out on my favorite charter boat. Should have some good pics and stories.

Re: '09 Summer Reports
Good luck next week. Look forward to your first hand report. I've been kicking around the idea of a mid-week trip the end of the month. Mass Bay Guides offers a Thurday mixed party 10 hr. trip with a 5 person max for $200. I don't know much about them, or late July fishing on the Cape, but if I get some good reports may give it a go. Have a good one!

Re: '09 Summer Reports
Can't touch TunaHunter's last report, but had a fun day that will have to spill over into Fresh H20/The River. Started in Niantic w/ Blackpoint and Millstone @ 5:30am. Caught a 16lb+ blue on light tackle that put on a real air show and struggle. After a few blues and only 1 striper the tide started to change around 10ish. Didn't want to wait it out so I decided to head to fresh water......

Re: '09 Summer Reports
BUNKER IN NIANTIC!!!! Left the house @ 2:45 this morning and was fishing by 4:30. Started at Black Point w/ 2 quick stripers (both under 30"). Then the fog rolled in so thick I couldn't see shore 25 yards away. No GPS so I had to anchor before I was completely blind. Sat for almost an hr. in the pea soup. As it lifted I ran over to Millstone and caught some schoolies and small blues around the outflow. Schools of bunker started moving in around 9:30ish, as well as a commercial trawler chasing them w/ big nets. Chased a few schools of blues near Millstone Point. Wanted to do some deep trolling in Twotree but left my lead core reel at home and was getting lower on fuel. Went back to Black Point and landed a couple of choppers on my light casting reel. Fun day

Re: '09 Summer Reports
Nice blue. This is going to sound crazy. But I haven't caught one all year. Hopefully will get one this weekend down in Jersey. Doing a 24 hour charter to Hudson Canyon. Going after Tile, Yellowfin and then play it by ear after that.

Re: '09 Summer Reports
Not crazy. Yesterday was the first day I've really seen them in numbers in Eastern CT and fairly close to shore. There hasn't been any big bait. I was excited to finally see some bunker. I've caught a handfull of 30"+ choppers as they are usually swimming solo while trolling tube and worm for stripers. Good luck on the trip and let us know how it goes!

Re: '09 Summer Reports
Went bluefin fishing out of Highlands,NJ. Hooked up with a 55lbs fish as before we even has the whole spread in the water, then spent the next 8 hours getting skunkt. I didn't even see a fish splash one of the lures. Hope I do better on my trip out of Boston next month.

It really is an addiction. I've had 2 great days out of 10 trips. And I have only caught mutiple fish one day. But those great days keep you coming back for more.

Re: '09 Summer Reports
Fun day but had to work for every fish. 4 stripers before 7:00, only one a keeper just over 28", the rest 25-27. Lots of blues. The last blue (pic) took almost 10 minutes on a light weight baitcaster, 10lb. test and drag. Actually had to follow him around. If I hit a big striper with that rig it would spool me out and break off in about 10 seconds. Figured that was a good one to call it a day on. Saw the Coast Guards tall ships out. I'm not sure if teh one in the photo is CG, but their big 3 master was out but not under sail. Pretty cool. Remember, if you fish with me and don't land fish, your next trip is FREE!! (so was the first!)
early am calm minutes before fish #1
Well, that was my day!

Re: '09 Summer Reports
Some days you're the windshield, somedays you are the bug. I got crushed for the second strait time this week.
Went out of Branford Tuesday 8/18 with a friend who hadn't fished since he was a kid. Not a day I wanted to get skunked. Never fished there before, but there was bait, schools of bunker coming up but always just a bit far away. TONS of scup. Unfortunately, I didn't bring any small bottom fishing rigs or cut bait just so we could catch something. Ended up spending time cruising the thimbles looking at houses, etc. Other 2 small boats that went out had the same story.
Today went out of Niantic. Real late start w/ only 1 1/2 hrs before the 10:30 slack tide. Spent all of that time holed up near a jetty by Black Point in a fog bank. It was worse over to 2Tree. Sun was up but by noon the fog was still bad. Water was full of crap. Finally threw in the towel. Would have felt bad if I spoke to anyone who had caught anything. Actually, I take that back. The wife of a the guy in the other boat trying to wait out the fog near me was having a blast jigging for 6-8" scup and asking if each one was a keeper. It doesn't have to be a 50lb. striper for someone to have fun.

Re: '09 Summer Reports
Hey guys it been a little while, I've been on a fishing break. Going out Thursday out of Mystic on a private boat. It a buddy of minds client's boat. He paying for gas and I have to get bait and mate for the day. I'll take that deal any day. Going for stripers and blues first and then going to hit a couple spots for blackfish, scups, and maybe a stray sea bass. The girlfriend got me my dream rod for our anniversery, a J&B Tackle custom blackfish rod. I can't wait to use it. Will have a report Thursday.

Re: '09 Summer Reports
Went out today from Niantic. Went out to Valiant Rock and trolled around looking for some stripers and found blues. Lots of them. I hadn't caught one all season and probably only one or two last year. We caught about 7 or 8 trolling 3 oz swin shads. They stopped biting on those and for some reason I went and grab 2 of my tuna jets. Put those on and picked up another 10 or so. Then we ran over to the light house off of Fisher's island. The blues were in the middle of a surface feeding frenzy. Luckily I had my spinner already rigged up with a popper. Pick up another 3 on the spinner and them headed home. I got to admit just going out,not caring about catching a keeper and just having fun was nice. A little sore and tired from all the action and having to mate. Stay tuned in 2 weeks I'll have a report from Stellwagen Bank, doing Tuna/Cod trip.
